1. Stop Charging to 100% Every Night
Most modern smartphones use lithium-ion batteries. These batteries have a limited number of charge cycles, and repeatedly charging to 100% accelerates wear. The sweet spot for lithium-ion health is keeping your battery between 20% and 80%. Many phones now have a built-in optimised charging feature — check your battery settings and turn it on.
2. Avoid Overnight Charging
Leaving your phone plugged in all night means it spends hours at 100% charge, which creates heat and stress on the battery cells. While most modern phones manage this with trickle charging, it still contributes to long-term degradation. If you can charge during the day and unplug when full, your battery will last longer.
Pro Tip
On Samsung devices, go to Settings, Battery and Device Care, Battery, More Battery Settings and enable Protect Battery. This caps charging at 85% to extend battery lifespan significantly over time.
3. Reduce Screen Brightness
Your screen is almost always the single biggest consumer of battery power. Auto-brightness is a good starting point, but keeping your screen slightly dimmer in well-lit environments makes a meaningful difference. On AMOLED screens (common in Samsung and OnePlus devices), using dark mode also saves battery, because black pixels are literally switched off.
4. Manage Location Services and Background Apps
Many apps run in the background and constantly ping your GPS, even when you are not using them. Social media, shopping apps, and navigation apps are common offenders. Go to your phone app settings and restrict background activity and location access to only while using the app for anything that does not strictly need it. You will often see a noticeable improvement in battery life within a day.
5. Avoid Extreme Heat
Heat is the number one enemy of lithium-ion batteries. Leaving your phone in a hot car, on a sun-facing windowsill, or under direct sunlight can permanently reduce battery capacity. If your phone gets warm while charging, move it to a cooler surface — never charge it while in a case that traps heat.
When to Come See Us
If your battery drains from 100% to dead in under 4 hours during normal use, or if your phone shuts off unexpectedly above 20%, it is likely time for a battery replacement. We carry batteries for Samsung, Apple, Huawei, and most other brands. Most replacements take just 30 minutes at our Parow Centre kiosk.
6. Use Battery Saver Mode More Often
Most people only turn on battery saver mode when they are at 10% and desperate. Try switching it on at 50% on days when you know you will be away from a charger. Battery saver mode reduces background sync, limits performance slightly, and dims the screen — all of which can dramatically extend your day. By building these habits, most people report getting an extra 1 to 2 hours of screen-on time per day, and battery long-term health improves significantly.
